Bocce Balls on Grass
Bocce Balls on Grass

Bocce is played with eight balls and one smaller white ball is called a pallina. There are four balls per team and they are made of a different color to distinguish the balls of one team from those of the other team.

Basic Rules:

Teams: Teams will consist of a minimum of two players, three or four players. A minimum of two players must play with. If two players are playing they must each throw two balls. If more than 2 players are playing on a team, any combination of thrower can be used as long as one player does not throw more than 2 balls (in any order) during a frame. A player sitting out a frame is allowed.

Starting the Game: A game begins with the flip of a coin. The team that wins the coin toss can choose to either throw the pallina first or choose the color of the balls they will use. First, pallina is rolled/thrown to start the game. The player rolling the pallina must roll the first ball. Then the players of the other team throws the ball and continue throwing the ball until all 4 of their balls are finished or their ball is nearest to he pallina. The nearest ball to the pallina decides the sequence of balls to be thrown.

Point or Score: The team whose ball(s) is (are) nearest to the pallina gets the point(s). Number of points will depend on how many balls are nearest to the pallina. One point is given for each ball of the inside team that is closer to the pallino than any ball of the opposing team and a 2 point bonus is given for any balls touching the pallino. The official score for the frame is determined after all 8 balls have been played and measured to the captain’s satisfaction. The team that scores point last throws the pallino to begin the next frame.

Measurements: All measurements should be made from the inside dimensions of the bocce ball to the inside dimension of the pallino.

Winning the game: The team who scores 13 points first, wins the game.
